In 2001, those hip high, washed out, salt encrusted beings we call ‘groms’, got their very own event, the 3A rated Mr Price Pro Junior.
What that meant exactly, was that they became recognised participants within the largest World Qualifying Series event in Africa and were given the opportunity to perform on a global platform, with the chance to pocket a big chunk of change, not to mention warm up for the main event!
Reared on saltwater, home school and endless surf DVD’s, these little ankle snappers are what we like to call ‘the future of surfing’, which is why the Red brand continues to nurture and develop these ‘bite sized’ surfing talents, by hosting the annual 3A Rated boys and girls events.
Part of the ten day surfing festival that annually attracts over 200 of the world’s leading professional athletes, as well as a cavalcade of international judges, organisers, press media, camera crews, team managers and the who’s who of the international surfing industry, the Mr Price Pro Junior thoroughly prepares U20 surfers for international competition.
In 2001, then 17-year-old Fred Pattachia (Hawaii) claimed the inaugural Mr Price Pro Junior title and four years later, went on to win the Vans Rookie of the Year award and qualify for the World Championship Tour.
Although the event was replaced by night surfing between the years 2002 and 2004, its reinstatement in 2005 brought with it sheer domination from local surfer Brandon Jackson
