The Mr Price Pro is the pinnacle of professional women’s surfing in Africa. Nowhere else on this untamed continent will you find a women’s event of this stature, or a surfing brand as willing to put its bucks behind girls in the curl, as at the Mr Price Pro.
It’s been sixteen good years of girls in the line-up since the Gunston 500 first introduced a women’s division back in 1992, which was won by Australian surfer Neridah Falconer.
In it’s eight years under the Gunston 500 banner, the event was dominated by Rochelle Ballard (Hawaii), Lynette MacKenzie (Australia) and Pauline Menczer (Australia) all of whom pocketed two wins each, with seven times ASP World Champion Layne Beachley (Australia) claiming the last Gunston 500 title back in 1999.
At the turn of the century Mr Price were quick to step up to the task of staging Africa’s first five star WQS women’s event.
Ever since then the event has blossomed into an internationally revered event and established itself as the biggest women’s surfing event in South Africa, offering local campaigners the opportunity to meet and compete against their surfing heroines, as well as accumulate precious ASP ratings points.
