Q&A; with defending Junior champ Klee Strachan
|
|
Last year’s Mr Price Pro Junior Men’s winner Klee Strachan is currently leading the ASP Afica and PST Junior tours, and is looking in good shape for another potential win this year. Craig Ritchie caught up with the powerful regular-footer from Winkelspruit for a quick chat with the defending champion.
Well, that’s another heat and you’re through to the quarters. Are you thinking about that spot in the finals right now?
KS: I’m pretty much just taking it heat by heat right now. I don’t want to get too ahead of myself and think about the final too much. Once I make the final and I know I’m there, then I can think about taking it on.
But as the defending champ, it’s gotta be in your mind a bit?
Ja, for sure. I definitely want to try win it again and get two under my belt – that would be sick!
As for the conditions today, what do you think? It’s a little small but you still looked like you were having some good ones out there – throwing down a few air reverses and managing to do some good turns?
I was hoping it would be a little bigger, obviously, because I’m a bigger guy, but I’m used to surfing small waves and it was pretty fun anyway. My plan was just to catch a lot of waves, see how it goes and hopefully catch one or two good ones.
And how has the rest of the year been for you competitive-wise? What have you been up to?
It’s been good. I’ve got some good results and I’ve been keeping my consistency up. A couple of semis and finals, so I’ve been loving it. I’m just trying to relax and have fun all the time.
You’ve also entered into the main event of the Mr Price Pro. Is this a sort of WQS preview for you? Have you got plans to do the full travel thing any time soon?
Not really, I want to give myself another two or three years to build myself up. I only want to go out there when I am really confident and know that I am ready for it. I don’t want to jump into the deep end too fast.
Now let’s say you make the final, who else do you think has the potential to be in there? Who’s been ripping at the moment?
My pick would probably be Shaun Joubert and Nick Godfrey, but also Casey Grant – he’s been ripping as well. I suppose all the Top 5 guys – we’re all really amped and we all want to win every contest we enter, so I suppose it’s really tough and we all have to push ourselves.
