Australian phenom Sally Fitzgibbons’ exciting surfing scored her an 8.33 and a 9.10 in her opening heat in the Womens’ Round of 48. Craig Ritchie caught up with the latest addition to the ASP Women’s World Tour as she left the water with an excellent combined heat total of 17.43.
What can I say? Another heat and you completely blew it away! How was it out there for that heat?
It was a little challenging on the high tide, but I managed to get my two scores so I’m happy!
I guess there’s no real pressure on you having qualified already – are you just in it for the contest experience?
I’m really stoked to have qualified already this year. It is a big pressure of my shoulders and for the rest of the year I can feel freer and just go a lot harder and have more fun out there.
And are you getting totally swamped by the media now, everyone asking you the same questions and all wanting a piece of Sally?
Nah it’s not too bad, I’m enjoying it. It’s good fun and I’m just going to keep doing what I’m doing and hopefully secure some more results in the second half of the year.
How old are you now and when did you start surfing?
I’m 17 years old and I started surfing when I was about 6 or 7. My dad and brother got me into it and I just loved it from there.
And what are you up to when you’re not competing?
I just love being in the water every day and try to improve my surfing. There’s always something to work on so I just love getting out there, scoring good waves and having a lot of fun.
Thanks Sally, very well done and good luck for the rest of the event.
Thanks!
