Hawaiian Sunny Garcia, the 1992 Gunston 500 champion and 2000 ASP World Champion, has been granted a wildcard entry into the Mr Price Pro. The popular 38-year-old is on the comeback trail and will be gunning for valuable WQS ratings points at New Pier Beach as he aims to re-qualify for the 2009 edition of the ASP World Tour.
How important is the Mr Price Pro for you in terms of qualifying for the WCT?
Mr. Price is a very important contest for me to re-qualify and it’s just nice to come back to Durban.
How much focus are you placing on the WQS this year?
I’m in training everyday so I can do well on the WQS.
What is it that you are looking forward to when returning to Durban, why do you enjoy the surf here?
I look forward to surfing and just hanging with the boys in Durban.
You must have fond memories of the event as a previous winner? Describe your win?
I have this great photo of me on the podium with all of the people,. It is such a great memory.
What are your general feelings now that you have turned over a new leaf and are back doing what you love?
After prison it is just really nice to be out surfing and having fun being free
How difficult was it to make this comeback?
It hasn’t been too difficult at all. It has actually been a lot of fun.
Do you feel you will be able to adapt to the modern style of progressive surfing?
Does my tenth place in the WQS standings answer that?
Have you changed anything in your surfing to adapt?
I don’t think I need to adapt at all. I just try to be the best I can be and see what happens.
What is it about the Hawaiian Triple Crown that has led to your utter domination?
The Triple Crown is in my own backyard and I just have fun with it.

What was your first job?
Job? Whats a job? I just surf!
If you were not a professional surfer what would you be and why?
I couldn’t imagine not surfing so I couldn’t tell you what I would be.
Are you single, married or dating?
I just got engaged
Describe your most embarrassing moment?
My most embarrassing moment was going to prison
What’s your greatest surfing memory?
My greatest surfing moment was beating Tom Carrol at the 86 Gotcha Pro
What’s your favourite surfing maneuver and why?
My favorite maneuver is getting tubed
Which fellow surfer do you most admire and why?
The surfer I admire the most ids Pat O’Connell because he’s such a great surfer and the most happy go lucky person I know and wish it would rub off on me.
