Jordy and Travis looking good at Bells
Jordy and Travis looking good at Bells

The Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach has got off to a flyer with a good 3-5 foot swell pushing through for the first 2 days of the event.
South Africans Jordy Smith and Travis Logie both had great starts with a win in round one and having the luxury of bypassing round 2 as the through to round 3. The top seeded surfers have all dominated the early rounds and with some good long-range swells forecasted I think the top surfers will continue to dominate.
My Fantasy surf team for this event is as follows: Kelly Slater, Joel Parkinson, Jordy Smith, Mick Fanning, Taylor Knox, Adam Melling, Freddy Patachia and Wildcard Davey Cathels.
I have gone with another Natural footed team for Bells bar Fred Patachia.
Looking at the forecast the surf is going to be good and the contest will most likely all be run at Bells. 4-8 Foot Bells is quit a demanding wave and with the view looking down from the hill it really shows which surfers not putting the board on Rail and who are, so I have looked at that and opted for a team that can lay down some serious turns on the big open faces.
You will notice I have not included current rating leader Taj Burrow. I feel Taj is overpriced for this event and although he rips Bells apart, I don’t think he uses the rail as much as the surfers I have picked. Stay far away from the flicky Air specialists for this event.
On the local surf scene the Pro Surf Tour got underway last weekend in firing 4-5 foot Eastern Beach, East London for the Buccaneers Surf Classic.
Sunday dawned with flawless left and right spitting tube rides with perfect offshore winds. As the day progressed, wind switched light side shore but made for some good solid sections. I was very stoked to take out the win form the fired up juniors, Mickey February and Beyrick de Fries with WQS campaigner Chad du Toit in 4th. The next event with be the Billabong SA champs in Cape Town at the end of May.
