Jordy Smith has quietly and confidently destroyed the field of surfers to take out the Mr. Price Pro Ballito and claiming no.1 spot on the ONE WORLD RATINGS in the process. Smith showed why he was favorite for the event as every surfer that came up against him had the jitters and seemed to fall against the heavy weight! In the final today, Smith had a combined 2 wave score of 15.43 to take out Scottborough surfer Casey Grant with total of 12.43. Jordy earned himself a whopping $ 16 000 and Casey Grant walked away with $ 9 000.
For Smith this was an Ordinary day in the office but for Casey Grant it was his best ever result. I have made Casey my surfer of the contest, although he looked nervous in his first final, he was on fire the entire event taking down big names such as Travis Logie in the process. Casey has a full repertoire of maneuvers and he used to lack a little power in his surfing, but as he has come of age, the power has stepped in and he is the full package now, the most improved surfer I have seen and the kid has a bright future.
Equal third place went to Royden Bryson and Klee Strachen who both had good consistent runs thoughout the event. In the Island Tribe expression session today, Damien Fahrenfort won BIGGEST AIR, Beyrick de Fries won MOST RADICAL MANEUVERS and Greg Emslie won MOST POWERFUL MANEUVERS, each walking away with R7000, not bad for one turn!
All in all this was a really successful event and thank you to the locals for giving up their beautiful town and beaches for the event. I spoke to a few of the locals down at the beach, they are really stoked with the event and have great respect, however they are battling to get showers and a deck built at Surfers car park at their expense. These are the guys that are often left cleaning up the beaches after the tourist etc. have left so lets hope the local municipality give the local surfers some recognition as there hearts are really in it and they want to keep the beaches awesome for all the surfers.
Thank you to everyone involved and as for the weather, it was like a summer holiday!
See you next year!
